Feature Programs Sioux Falls Bicycle Master Plan [+]
Sioux Falls has been a leader in the development of urban trail systems. The greenway trail, developed in the 1970's, was a pioneer of the trails movement. Now, 30 years later, the greenway remains one of Sioux Falls' defining features.
But did you know that Sioux Falls also has a supplemental network of bicycle trails throughout the city that connect neighborhoods to the greenway? As the City grows, it becomes increasingly important to identify future trails and corridors.
To address these emerging recreation and transportation needs, the City of Sioux Falls completed a Bicycle Master Plan. This program details the recommendations made to that master plan.

History of the Falls [+]
The natural beauty of the Falls of the Big Sioux River gave the city of Sioux Falls its name and has been a beacon to people for thousands of years.
The magnificence and power of water rushing over the prehistoric quartzite rock has attracted many groups including Native Americans, land prospectors, soldiers and settlers. In pioneer days the Falls were tapped for water power to run the Queen Bee Mill, Drake Springs Polishing Works and others. The Falls have been revered, celebrated, abused, neglected, refurbished, and ultimately revered again.
Through it all the Falls have stood the test of time, changed only by Mother Nature’s slow hand and mankind’s need of industry. This is the story of the Falls of the Big Sioux River.

The Drug & Alcohol-Free Communities Coalition is sponsoring this special awareness campaign and video, drawing attention to the crisis of underage drinking and driving in South Dakota.
Parent's Worst Nightmare [+]
In South Dakota, statistics speak for themselves. Recent reports show nearly half of teens have had at least one drink of alcohol in the last 30 days. And one-third have ridden in a car driven by someone who's been drinking in the last 30 days.
Parents Worst Nightmare is a program featuring Jodi White and Todd Holter, two parents who recently lost their children to traffic crashes involving alcohol. Their stories send a powerful message in hopes that other parents will be moved to make it a priority to convince their children not to use alcohol.
Vacationing in America [+]
Vacationing in America has developed greatly over the last 150 years. Originally a privilege for only the very wealthy, early vacations and periods of relaxation took place at spas where the sick would go to "take the waters," and activities for their healthy family members abounded. With the growth of the middle class at the end of the 19th century, more people began to visit spas and other nearby destinations, though usually through less-expensive means. As more Americans began traveling, the market and demand for vacations grew.
With the advent of railroads, vacation leave for workers, and the forty hour work week, the possibility of traveling across the continent became a reality. Railroads helped develop America's national parks as an enticement for people to travel on their lines. They also introduced much of the West to the rest of the country. By the early 1900s, with the invention of automobiles and the newly-built roads to drive them on, vacations became a more personal experience as people chose exactly when, where, and for how long they wanted to travel. This program, along with The Old Courthouse Museum's "Vacationing in America" exhibit, explores these patterns of early vacations in the United States, showing that, while methods have changed, the desire to travel, relax, and explore new and different places has remained the same.
Public Service Programs and PSAs A Cycling Statistic [+]
There are 85 million bicycle riders in the United States.
Over one-half million visit hospital emergency rooms with injuries each year, with over 700 dying from head injuries. Most serious head injuries that result from bike riding accidents could be avoided by wearing a helmet.
In this program, you will see three real-life examples how a bicycle helmet saved each person from becoming a cycling statistic.
Metro Communication’s 911 Citizens' Academy [+]
Metro Communication’s 911 Citizens' Academy was developed to promote education within the community of our 911 system.
Our academy consists of three and a half hours of classroom and four hours of scheduled observation time in our 911 Center.
The class is held in the evening from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. During this time, participants will learn Metro’s role within the community and acquire an understanding of what happens behind the scenes from the time a 911 call is received, to the time the responders arrive on scene at the emergency. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in activities that will test their dexterity and demonstrate a dispatcher’s ability to multi-task, as well as listening to dramatic 911 recordings and radio traffic. During the four hours of observation, participants will sit side by side with a dispatcher and will be able to hear actual 911 calls and live radio transmissions.
This experience will allow them to witness the dynamics of the entire 911 system in action.
