Title: Phase 2 Flood Control Work Progresses, Bike Trail Opens

Runge Enterprises has finished work on the levee system from 41st Street north to Sherman Park on the east side of the Big Sioux River, allowing the reopening of the Bike Trail. This will open up 1.5 miles of trail and provide approximately 8 miles of unobstructed trail on the south and west sides of the city.

When work is completed on Phase 2 of the project, the City will open up the levee from I-29 to 41st Street on the south side of Skunk Creek and the west side of the Big Sioux River to recreational use as a gravel-surfaced trail. The City will pave this section in 2012.

With the completion of Phase 2, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin the work of certifing these levees so that FEMA can proceed with updating the Flood Insurance Rate Maps for this area.

For information regarding the current status of the Bike Trail system, go to the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation website at www.siouxfallsparks.org/bike.
