Title: Notice To Remove Snow and Ice from Sidewalks

In conjunction with the recent snowfall event, the City of Sioux Falls reminds all owners or persons in possession of property abutting on public access sidewalks to clear sidewalks of snow and ice within 48 hours after every snowfall event or accumulation of snow or ice. This includes sidewalks abutting any side of the property including front, side, or back.

If the owner or person in possession fails to remove the snow or ice within 72 hours of accumulation, the City may remove the snow or ice and charge the cost to the abutting property owner per City Ordinance Chapter 38—Article V, Snow and Ice Removal.

End of Snow or Ice Accumulations: According to the National Weather Service Sioux Falls office, snow accumulation stopped at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2012.

Submitting Complaints: The City of Sioux Falls Public Parking Division will begin taking complaints beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at 367-8171.

Back of Curb Sidewalk: Back of curb sidewalk, as defined by the City, is sidewalk directly adjacent or abutting the street curb. If the City Street Maintenance pushes snow behind the curb during street snow removal operations, they will come back and remove the snow they pushed onto the back of curb sidewalk. Generally, there will still be a small amount of snow left on the sidewalk. It is the property owner’s responsibility to remove the remainder of the snow. Also, if the snowfall is light enough that the streets are not plowed, the sidewalk will not be cleared by City Street Maintenance and it will be the property owner’s responsibility to remove the snow.
