The City of Sioux Falls Office of Community Development announced today that it completed a record number of projects in 2011 in its Single Family Housing Rehabilitation Loan program. A total of 60 rehabilitation projects were completed in the program in 2011, breaking the previous record of 55 projects in 2010.
The 60 completed Single Family Housing Rehabilitation Loan Program projects constitute a 10 percent increase over 2010, and a 62 percent increase over a two-year period since 2009. The program has been in place since 1975.
This housing rehab program provides loans to income-qualified households to maintain their properties in a decent, safe, and sanitary condition. Each applicant must have owned and occupied the house for a minimum of one year. A property must be a single-family dwelling unit and be located within the city limits of Sioux Falls. Eligible repairs may include electrical updates, repair or replacement of leaky plumbing, installation of new high-efficiency heating systems, roofing, windows, doors, and much more.
“We were able to respond to continued strong demand from the community for this program by being aggressive and redirecting funds within the Affordable Housing Division of Community Development to meet those needs. It is important for our department to be flexible in our decision making during the course of any year so we can insure we are meeting the needs of our community and neighborhoods,” stated Darrin Smith, Director of Community Development for the City of Sioux Falls. “Our staff is very proud of their mission to assist families and neighborhoods, and the results demonstrate that,” Smith concluded.
