Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill

The Landfill's mission is to provide environmentally and fiscally sound solid waste management and disposal services to our customers.

The Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill (SFRSL) is the largest landfill in the state of South Dakota and is operated under the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The SFRSL began operations in 1979; the landfill was originally known as the Runge Landfill. It is located approximately 7.5 miles west of the City of Sioux Falls, at the intersection of 267th Street and 464th Avenue.

The SFRSL has a service area covering five counties: Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner. Approximately 205,000 citizens utilize the services provided by the SFRSL. Currently, the SFRSL accepts approximately 525 tons per day of municipal solid waste (MSW) and approximately 300 tons per day of construction and demolition debris (C&D).

The SFRSL has a total permitted area of 469 acres, and owns another 142.5 acres of adjacent property that is currently not included in the facility permit. There are several disposal areas located at the SFRSL.

These areas include a 160-acre active site, which includes two active C&D areas, an active MSW area, a composting operation area, an asbestos disposal area, and a tree/brush pile area. Also at the site is a 160-acre expansion site, which includes an active MSW cell, a deer carcass disposal area, a petroleum contaminated soil treatment area, a tire storage pile, and a white goods (appliance) recycling area. Other surrounding SFRSL acreages are utilized for storm water management and buffer areas.
