Work continues on the flood control levees in Sioux Falls. Phase 2 on Skunk Creek and on the Big Sioux River below Skunk Creek is nearing completion with only paving of the bike trail, seeding and electrical work on the new dam left to be completed. This work should be completed in the next few weeks with possibly some minor cleanup work extending into next spring.
Phase 3 work, levees on Big Sioux River above the diversion dam and on the diversion channel as well as improvements to the diversion dam all on the north side of the city, is progressing rapidly. Work is now beginning on the diversion dam, the levee along the north side of the airport, and drainage structures through the levee near Minnesota Ave. This work has necessitated closure of the bike trail in the area. As work is progressing rapidly, work on the levees where the bike trail is located should be completed earlier than previously anticipated. This final phase is scheduled to be completed by fall of 2012.
